Empty Shop window - updates

[3rd Update - 13th June 2012 - well, it looks like we now have the use of the empty shops in the Quintins centre, 4 of which need some care and attention. We just need to arrange a suitable date to collect the keys and do some clearing and cleaning. If you are up for a spot of sweeping, bin-bag filling, hoovering and window-washing, please get in touch and we'll advise you of the date. Art can go in as soon as the cleaning is finished :)
The insurance for the windows for other shops is still being discussed so no more movement on those yet...]

[2nd UPDATE: All pictures have now had to removed from the shops being let by Ross & CO until insurance cover for the windows is sorted (by Hailsham Town Council). The 2 units owned by the Quintins are still in use by artists but one has a boarded up smashed window. The owners / agents don't seem in a hurry to fix it or remove the broken glass. Perhaps we can arrange to decoratively paint the board if it is staying put for a while. The boarded up window further down the high street was due to the window dropping in its frame, not due to vandalism. All we can do now is wait...]

[1st UPDATE: Despite an apparent vandalism attack on one of the windows, the work remains in all other windows and the next changeover should be on the weekend of 20th May - anyone interested, please get in touch. There will be a FLORAL theme to tie in with Hailsham in Bloom]

There are 5 empty shop units in prime, highly visible locations in Hailsham High Street just waiting for creative displays to make them look fabulous. They have all been cleaned up already and we will have access on Sunday 25th March so unloading and setting up displays shoould be much easier than in the week.
We have had paintings and photography in the windows for 3 x 8 week sessions now and they have been a great success. Although it is not a commercial venture and no prices are on view, several artists have subsequently been contacted and made sales and recieved commissions as a direct result of their work being seen. But we don't need to limit ourselves to paintings and photography: sculptures, pottery, needlecrafts and fashion will all lend themselves to being shown in the windows. The fact that units have been tidied up, the High Street looks much better AND some units have now been let is also testement to the success of the project as a whole.
This idea started in Hailsham 3 years ago when Gallery North managed to get some work in the empty windows as part of the High Street Art Trail during the Hailsham Arts Festival. Various issues meant that the project could not be repeated the following year, but with some new blood in the town council came a new project - High Street Revitalisation. Gallery North and Arlington Arts Group were asked if we would like to help place artists' work in the empty windows after a cleanup day was organised by the council and a team of volunteers. Once again, the Hailsham Arts Festival was the launch date of the project and we are delighted that the agents and owners of the properties are happy for it to continue and more units are being added to the 'portfolio'.
Anyone interested in showing some creative work in the windows, please do get in touch. The arrangement is that Cllr Steve McAuliffe is in charge of the keys and liaises with the agents. We arange a single day for work to go into / out of the windows. Artists bring their own display equipment, materials and, if electricity is switched on, they can bring LED lights on timers. A contribution to cover electricity costs would be the only charge. The work stays put for roughly 8 weeks (removal date arranged on set up day) UNLESS the unit is let beforehand, or work needs to be undertaken in which case the artist will be asked to remove the work at short notice. Work must be displayed to a high standard - the whole point is to make the empty shops look better. No prices may be displayed on any work as this is not a commercial venture, it is merely a showcase opportunity. Artists should insure their own work. Gallery North will handle any enquiries (for a small donation) or artists can display their own contact details in the windows. The windows must be kept clean by the artists - Xtreme Clean have agreed a very good price ( Dave: 01323 832768 Mobile : 07530 429933) or artists can do the cleaning themselves. Any questions? Get in touch via the How to Find Us page.

Art&Craft Show - applications now open

Arlington Art & Craft Show - 12/13th May 2012 - open to all artists to exhibit.
Download your copy of the Artist's Application Form HERE

This year we will only have space for a few craft stalls so these are by invitation only

Dear Artist/ Craftsperson

this year's Arlington Art & Craft Show will take place on 12th and 13th May, with possibly an evening viewing on either Friday 11th May or Saturday 12th May - details of this to follow. The next FULL Arlington Arts Festival will be in 2013 but we may have more Open Studios and a small exhibition in September of this year as part of the Hailsham Arts Festival.

Applications for the Art & Craft Show in May are open to all. There is no formal selection process for those exhibiting work - if you think it is worthy to sell that’s good enough for us. All of our previous shows have had a great selection of work from amateurs and professionals at prices from £50 - £500. We are keen to encourage newly exhibiting artists. One requirement is that artists do not show work which has already been shown at a previous Arlington Art Show. We choose which crafts to accept in order to ensure a good variety of stalls. Obviously appearance is important so we expect all art work to be displayed well and all stalls to be smart and tidy. Please insure your own work - the SAA offer a good insurance scheme for artists.

Pitches in the Car Park. We will have a small number of pitches for crafts in the car park next to Arlington Village Hall which are by invitation only.

Screens in the hall. Artists will be able to hang their own work on screens in Arlington Village Hall. Each screen has a hanging space of at least 44 x 44" (110 x 110cm) and artists may book either whole or half screens (split horizontally) up to 2 screens per artist. We will provide hooks, artists must hang their own work between 3 and 6pm on Friday 11th May - there must be at least 2" (5cm) between pictures and no pictures must be hung over the edges of the screens. Please take this into account when deciding how many screens to book. Pictures incorrectly hung will be removed by the organisers. All pictures must be framed and ready to hang AND this year you may also use the screens to display unframed work which is neatly window mounted and wrapped in a protective covering (hung using tages provided). You will need to provide and display labels for all your pictures (no white-tac or tape or sticky labels please!). A few paintings on canvas larger than 44 x 44” may be hung on wall space by prior arrangement.

On arrival on 11th May you will be asked to complete a catalogue sheet with full details of the pictures you are exhibiting. Artists may leave boxes of their own cards (prints of or original work by the artist only) and up to 4 unframed works for the browser (@ £1 each) - all items individually wrapped and priced please. You will be given a sheet of coded labels which you should attach to your cards to ensure accurate recording of any sales.

All artists exhibiting are asked to steward please.

Fees: *There are no registration fees this year*

Pitches in the car park - £6 (£5 AAG Members) per pitch per day, electric supply is a flat £5 if needed.

Screens in the hall - £10 (£8 AAG Members) per screen, £6 (£4 AAG Members) per half screen, split horizontally
Browser pictures - £1 each

Commission on all sales from the hall will be 10%.

Membership of Arlington Arts Group. Members benefit from discounts at AAG events, Pictures & Frames of Horam, Planahead in Eastbourne and on materials from the SAA Catalogue (when ordered through the group). All members are also covered under the group’s SAA Public Liability Insurance at AAG events. A Newsletter is produced every 2 months. Hailsham Shop Windows
There will be a changeover of artists displaying work in the empty shop windows in Hailsham High Street on 29th January.

This is part of the Hailsham Town Council's initiative for High Street Revitalisation in conjunction with the empty shop owners and the letting agents (Ross and Co) which has greatly helped to improve the appearance of the High Street, and several of the units have now been let. The scheme has received some press attention and may well be a blueprint for other councils.

This is not a commercial venture - it is an opportunity for artists to show work and help the appearance of the High Street. Pictures in the windows are not priced but Gallery North will handle all enquiries about work if the artists have given them details. There is no commission taken on any sales but pictures have to remain in the windows once sold until the end of the exhibition.

It looks like we have only 3 units available to us at the time of writing and we have 3 artists lined up, but please do get in touch if you are interested in showing work for approximately 8 weeks as more empty units may become available. You would need to provide your own stands / easels, display your own work, insure your work for the exhibition duration, and collect your work when asked - if the shops are let during the exhibition time, you will be asked to remove your work, possibly at short notice.

If interested please email asap or call Josie at Hailsham Creative on 01323 840 048 or leave a message for Jenny at Gallery North (70 High St, Hailsham) on 01323 846 938.

Arlington Art Show 2012
This is scheduled to be in the Village Hall on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, Sat, Sun and probably Monday (TBC). The format will be much the same as our last year's summer show and submission forms will be available on the website soon. If you would like a form posted to you please SEND A SAE to the address below marked Arlington Art Show 2012. We want everyone who wants to show their work to have the opportunity so we do not have a selection committee, but we are always oversubscribed so space is allocated on a first come first served basis.
We will invite a few crafts people who have had stalls with us before but will not be advertising craft pitches for sale this year.

Other events this year will include the exhibition of the winning entries in the Bluebell competition during the Hailsham Arts Festival in September. We will discuss this at the meeting on 1st Feb as we may decide to extend the exhibition to other artists and perhaps have a couple of 'fringe' festival events in the village, such as artists' open studios. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or ideas.

WANTED

Newsletter secretary
The Newsletters are set up and printed every 2 months (that's just 6 a year) and posted or emailed to all AAG members. [You may have noticed a lack of Newsletter in December - it was a quiet month for the group so there was not much to report. I also simply ran out of time to produce one]
If you are able to collate information and set it up on a computer, I can arrange the printing. This email version if very easy to edit once the material is all ready. Full training will be given!

Please do consider taking on this role - ask
for more details - and let one of us know before the next meeting.
Thank you!
