December looms

We are nearly into December and that busy social calendar so there is only one more Art Session at Arlington Village Hall before the New Year. This Thursday, 1st Dec, the suggested theme is A Study in Scarlet - make of it what you will. The inspiration for the theme is (from Wikepedia)
A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, introducing his new character of Sherlock Holmes, who later became one of the most famous literary detective characters. He wrote the story in 1886, and it was published [on 1st Dec] the next year. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to his sidekick Doctor Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."

The following week, on 8th December, we will have our Christmas Open Evening open to all visitors, with live music, festive nibbles and drinks. Free entry. Regular attending artists will put a selection of their work on show and some of it may even be for sale. Please do pop in any time between 7 and 9pm. Jim Tipler will play guitar and Lawrie Skinner will play accordion - there may be a hint of a festive theme to the music...

Hailsham Shop Windows - update

There will be a changeover of artists displaying work in the empty shop windows in Hailsham High Street on 11th November.

If you would like to show work (we are particularly keen for large works to go on show) for approximately 8 weeks in a shop window exhibtion, please do get in touch. You would need to provide your own stands / easels, display your own work, insure your work for the exhibtion duration (11 th November to 11th January), and collect your work when asked - if the shops are let during the exhibition time, you will be asked to remove your work, possibly at short notice.

This is part of the Hailsham Town Council's initiative for High Street Revitalisation in conjunction with the empty shop owners and the letting agents (Ross and Co). You may be asked to help clean up the interior of the shop when placing your work, if it has not already been done. You will be responsible for keeping the windows cleaned.

This is not a commercial venture - it is an opportunity to show your work and help the appearance of the High Street. Pictures in the windows must not have any prices on them - you can put your own contact details in the window if you wish.  Gallery North will kindly handle all enquiries about your work so you will need to provide a list of the work with prices and either a 'map' of the window or photos of the work for the gallery stewards. There will be no commission on any sales but pictures will have to remain in the windows once sold until the end of the exhibition.

If interested please email us asap.

Ivy brought in a large selection of her works including watercolour and pastel landscapes & buildings and of course her chalk pastel animals pictures. It was great to see so many of the pictures that Ivy works on at the Thursday Evening sessions, finished and framed.

July - Brenda Carr
Brenda Carr
By Brenda Carr
Brenda studied Art at college as a student and has mainly used watercolours for years but has recently started using acrylics to great effect. Her work was on show at The Old Oak as part of the Arlington Arts Festival and in both the Arlington and Wilmngton Art Shows. What’s Next?

September
Hailsham Arts Festival - Hailsham Town Council are trying to arrange empty shop space for artists to show work, particularly during the Art Trail week, 9-19th September This would not be like our pop-up gallery last year but would be window space inside empty and locked shops. Artists would be responsibe for displaying their own work (and arranging how to display it) and would need to arrange key collection via the Town Council. There is the distinct possibility that this would extend beyond the festival week. Again, please get in touch if you are interested.

October or November
We would like to have another art show which would include our Secret Art Sale in aid of Chestnut Tree House. If you would like to show work and / or complete a small canvas to donate to the Secreat Art Sale, let me know.

“Artists of the Month”

“Artists of the Month”
We get to see what members work on at the Thursday Art Evenings and at exhibitions, but it is great to see all the other work they do and have done in the past.

April - Claire Carr
Claire kindly volunteered to be our first ever ‘Artist of the month’ and brought in examples of her work to show us and to talk about.  Claire has done commissions in the past and does some very unusual painted dolls, none of which we had seen before so we had a chance to view these and find a bit more about how Claire works. You can see more of Claire’s work on her website
http://clairecarrartist.yolasite.com

May - Richard Brown
Richard unwittingly volunteered to show his works to us in May. He gave us a very informative introduction about his main artistic influence which was his geat uncle, the portrait painter R G Eves and showed examples of his portraits. We looked at various recent pieces of Richard’s work including his winning entry in the 2010 Paint me a Bluebell competition.

Painting Demonstration - Colin Merrin

Thursday 30th June, 7-9pm, Arlington Village Hall

Colin Merrin was born in London and studied at Maidstone College of Art, Kingston University and the University of London, Institute of Education. Primarily a landscape and figurative painter, he strongly believes the process of making paintings to be at least as important as what they represent. It is the abstract and expressionist elements; the manipulation and physicality of paint and colour and the qualities of light and mood that interest him. Whilst based in London, the urban landscape dominated his work. Nevertheless since 2007 he has lived and worked in Sussex and recent paintings have reflected more rural themes.

£6 per person, all welcome. (£5 AAG members) Please call or email to book your place.
