Rainsbury House Exmoor watercolour course

For the attention of the Arlington Arts Group
Re: Rainsbury House Exmoor inaugural watercolour painting course – 15th – 17th May 2015
We are emailing you to highlight the launch of our inaugural residential watercolour painting course in the stunning environs of Exmoor. As it is our launch course, we have rather pushed the boat out.  The course will be run by professional artist and tutor Andy Lee. But there is much more on offer. Please see the attached info and itinerary. Further info is available on our website: www.rainsburyhouse.co.uk
By way of short introduction, we moved to Exmoor from Dulwich in December 2012. We spent 18 months renovating two barns to create two luxurious 4 Star Gold self catering holiday cottages, sleeping a total of 13 people. We also converted the original 1750s farmhouse into a painting studio from which to run art courses, and for painting groups to hire. We have 16 gloriously tranquil acres of woodland and pasture which adjoins Wimbleball Lake – stunning for en plein air painting.
If the course is of interest to members of your group, please give us a call to book. We are happy to answer questions at any time.
Kind regards
Terry and Angela Brownbill

The Abstract world of Angela Poole

For those who missed our art session on Thursday 15th Jan, you missed a very interesting evening. Angela Poole showed us the fascinating work that she did at City College Brighton and Hove and talked us through some techniques for producing original abstract works. Angie had put in so much work and material preparation for the evening, it was a shame that more people weren't there to enjoy it, but the weather was not kind to us! Those that participated produced an abstract work with acrylics and palette knives using a small viewfinder on a photo, then some went on to use the same viewfinder on the new painting to reduce the work further to produce another piece.

Angela showed us some of her clay work, how to create and use a lightbox and the wonders of light on foil wrap, a 'dolly', collage preparatory work and many others ways to be inspired.  A very enjoyable evening. Thank you, Angela.

Congratulations to Mary Lovell for winning the vote for best piece for the evening, and to Richard Brown for being runner up (narrowly beating Al Saxby).

A message from Angie Poole:
On the 15th of January there will be a Mystery Prize. Criteria for judging an abstract will be
1) Do you like it?
2) Do you approve of the use of light and shade?
3) Is there any Perspective?
4) Has the artist captured an atmosphere?

There will be a short description of four methods used at the City College Brighton and Hove
which will help to make that first terrifying mark on paper less painful.
a) Make a Collage of a provided scene noting light and contrast
or b) Looking for the "Good Bit"
or c) Using a light box to obscure a clear view and provoke the imagination
or d) If you use a palette knife to recreate a provided picture it simply cannot be a photo type copy
Bring tubes of acrylic paint, two pieces of acrylic paper have been provided, I recommend using tape and a board if you have one. I love my stay wet palette but an old saucer will do
