Winning Degas

The winner in our monthly competition in March 2013 was Helen Gander with this beautiful pastel picture inspired by the work of  "Edgar Degas". Practically everyone at the session worked on a piece inspired by the week's 'theme' artists of Degas or Laura Knight, so there was some strong competition.

The next competition is on 9th May. Produce a piece (which you can start in advance but must work on at the session on 9th) inspired by the work or lives of "Gustav Klimt" or "Eric Ravilious".

Session fee- £5 / £2.50 AAG members.
Accompanied children half price.

Demonstration and Workshop with Ben Ecclestone

25th April - £5 (half price with active AAG Loyalty card)

Drawing like Matisse

I would recommend that people bring:

  • several sheets of paper (good cartridge is fine),
  • charcoal or Conte' crayon,
  • soft pencil ( nothing harder than 4b, prefererably 6b)
  • and pen and ink. Pens should be dip pens and not fibre tips or biro type pens - old fountain pens can be used, or trim your own quill or reed pen. Even a piece of sharpened bamboo will do but ordinary dip pens are best; you can vary the thickness of the line with the flexible nib. Ink ought to be black and I recommend Acrylic-based ink.

We would need a model, some willing person from the group would be fine

Boccioni and Marc

Artists to look at this week:
Umberto Boccioni  - I particularly like the work form the 1910s, futurist style.
Franz Marc - again early 1900s work, German expressionist.

William de Wilde (Bill) talked about the history of seascapes in art, artists
around the south coast and  his own artistic career. He then brought a painting
to life before our eyes with some apparently simple steps and gave us
lots of hints and tips on using acrylic paints. Knickers and syringes
make surprising paint applicators!

Competition winner

We had a very successful evening on the night that David Hockney was our inspiration. The winner of the favourite picture competition was Hazel Hooker with her Hockney inspired treescape painted in acrylics. Hazel won a set of 12 Jaxon Aquarell pastels with a pair of Jaxhair brushes with thanks to Great Art.
