Art Exhibition at the Library Our exhibition at Hailsham Library starts on Tuesday 4th September for a month and is part of the Hailsham Arts Festival Art Trail. The winning entries in the ‘paint me a bluebell’ competition will be on show plus work from most of the regulars at the Thursday Arts Sessions.
If you wish to show work, please arrive at the Library at 8.30am to hang it. The screen are Velcro so the pictures either need to be light enough to hang with a self adhesive Velcro patch or have a long enough cord to hang from an ‘s’ hook. Provide a label to go beside your work and put contact details on the back – the library will give your details to anyone interested in buying your work so they can contact you directly.

Free Session Our Thursday evening art sessions at Arlington Village hall are gradually becoming busier and have a lovely atmosphere, with several children attending with their parents. Over the winter months we do tend to be a bit quieter so to attract more regular members we are having a Free Session on Thursday 13th September. Please tell all of your friends and get them to come along and join in for the evening with no commitment. We even have some materials that they could use if they don’t have any and plenty of art magazines and reference books for inspiration.
The suggested theme for the evening is ‘All that Jazz’ but, as usual, everyone is welcome to work on their own project.
Competition In August the competition subject was "Superhero" and we the winning picture was an excellent portrayal of batman painted by Helen Gander who won a £20 voucher for Jacksons Art Supplies.
Teresa Currie On 5th July we had a very enjoyable demonstration and workshop with Teresa Currie who used chalk pastels to create an atmospheric scene of a lighthouse in beautiful shades or purples and pinks. You can see the picture in one of the windows in Hailsham high Street until 19th September and Teresa will be running a workshop on this subject on Wednesday 12th Sept at Gallery North – tickets are £15 and are available from the gallery.

Christmas Open Evening Thursday 13th December – all welcome. We will have a display of work by regulars and some small items for sale so you may pick up a last minute present. Drinks and nibbles.

Arlington Arts Festival 2013 We will be planning the dates (probably June) and details for this soon – please let us know if you would like to be involved in any way. If you remember, in 2011 we had live music events, local art trail venues and the annual Arlington Art & Craft Show.
We really do need more committee members to make this event possible – if you could take on a role, anything from steward to publicity manager, please do let us know.

Artist of the Month
Each month we invite one of our members to bring a selection of their work along to one of the Art Sessions to show us. Some will give a short talk, some will just leave the work to be browsed through - it's informal but a great way to see some of the work that we don't usually get to see and, often, to find out a bit more about how the artist began their artistic 'journey'.
Sue Groom was our artist of the month for July. Sue’s best subject at school was art, she worked in Liberty’s in Regent Street then had the chance to use her artists skills as a window dresser for Straickers. Once her children had grown up, Sue then started attending art courses and holidays and has a wide selection of floral and landscape watercolours and drawings.

Hailsham Art Group The inaugural meeting of this new group will be on Monday 17th September 2-4pm at Gallery North, with the second session being on Tuesday 18th Sept 6.30-8.30pm.  Josie Tipler will start each session with a half hour demonstration then members can either work on their own project or the subject of the demonstration. We will cover a wide variety of subjects and mediums, with the first week covering Animal portraits in Pastels.
Sessions will be £6, and will run every Monday and Tuesday - the Tuesday evening demonstration will be a repeat of the Monday afternoon so members can attend either or both. There will initially be no membership fee.
Space at Gallery North is limited so please book your place in advance. 01323 485153  hailshamartgroup@gmail.com. www.hailshamartgroup.blogspot.com

Not such a pane

UPDATE: We would like a changeover of art on 29th August. If you're interested, get in touch asap.

A new venue joins the 'gallery' of Art in Empty Shops in Hailsham. This one is in the Quintins Centre in the High Street.
Arlington Arts Group created some special panels to fit the window panes plus we are displaying some past entries in the Paint me a Bluebell Competition.

I called the letting agents for the 3 empty units next to Tesco and all 3 have now been Let - in fact there are decorators in the end one and a furniture store is opening soon. Good news.

Artistic Shop Window displays needed

Act before 31st July

The highly successful Art in Hailsham Empty Shops project is due for a changeover on 29th August. We will have a 3 week exhibition period, rather than the usual 8 weeks, to cover the Hailsham Arts Festival from 8-16th sept.

There is a special Art Trail leaflet being produced for the festival and we can name artists who will be showing work in the empty shops, although we can not say which shops are available until the last minute.

Paintings, sculpture, photography, crafts, fashion, prints - all kinds of visual art can be displayed. No prices can be shown but you can display your contact details or ask to be contacted via Gallery North or Arlington Arts Group. Full details on the AAG blog page here and here.

If you would like to participate and put a display in one of the available empty shop windows from 29th August until 19th Sept please get back to me in the next couple of days because the leaflet goes to print on 31st July.
Once available units are confirmed, I will get back in touch with those who want to display and arrange who will be showing work where. All I need for now is names.

The empty windows will provide an excellent opportunity to publicise the Hailsham Arts Festival so it would be great if you could draw or paint a poster/canvas/board advertising the festival. You can see the logo and more information about the festival programme on the website www.hailshamartsfestival.co.uk.

More Art blooms in Hailsham Empty Shops

A team of 9 gathered on Wednesday evening to clean up 4 of the empty shops in Hailsham High Street and to display works of art to tie in with the Hailsham in Bloom floral theme. 3 hours and several bin bags later, having been scrubbed, scraped, buffed, polished, swept and dusted, all 4 shops sported gleaming windows full of original art, some of it by first time exhibitors. The exhibition runs from Wed 28th June to Wed 29th August when there will be another changeover of art ready for the Hailsham Arts Festival (8th - 16th Sept).

Get creating!
We have the use of the Greengrocers inside the Quintins so we now need some bespoke pieces created to display as soon as possible - the frontage is made up of shutters of 28 windows which are 100cm wide by 25cm high and the work will need to be taped to the inside filling each window pane. If you are happy to create and *donate a suitable piece (*as it is being taped to the windows and the door is a shutter the work probably can not be removed without being damaged), please do let me know. The theme is Hailsham in Bloom so get creating!

Take part
If you would be interested in showing work in the future and/or  helping to clean up more of the empty sops in Hailsham, get in touch.

Josie Tipler and Jill Church

Viv Sang and Wendy Bysouth

Claire Redpath and Kirsty and Ian Davis

Rod Parker and Pam Robinson

And the cleanup squad also included Cllr Steve McAuliffe of Hailsham Town Council who is working hard to gain access to all of the empty shops to get them cleaned up and in use. If you want to discuss a project with Steve  you can contact him via the Town Council website.
